You have no idea how close this was to a rant
rather than a rave.
Answer me this. Is there anyone you personally
know that has to be contacted at any given moment of the day?
Because, I don't know anyone like that (especially when a beeper
will do). When did people think of themselves as being sooooo
important that someone may have to call them or that they can't
spend a buck on a pay phone? What gets me are the teenagers
on cellular phones who seem to exist to disturb my "out
of house" dinner time and movie experience.
People.
Ordinarily, I hate cellphones. I hate using them.
I hate when other people use them. I hate the health hazzards
involved. I hate hearing intimate details of other peoples conversations.
I hate how they ring. I hate how other people make annoying
songs for their rings. I JUST HATE THEM!!
Don't ya just love them? There you are in a movie
theatre, you are watching a movie that you have waited months
for and what happens? Some guy gets a call on his cell phone
and begins to have a conversation about the movie that you're
trying to watch. This is what I call justifiable homocide.
Cell phones are also dangerous in there general
use. If you use a cell phone in the wrong blasting area, do
you know what happens? KA-BOOM!!! The radio frequency can set
off the charge. Let's also remember the long term use of cell
phones has been known to cause BRAIN CANCER. Let me give you
a hint of what you are doing. Turn on a microwave. Put it on
high for 10 minutes. Put your head right next to it. Microwaves
operate at 1gHz. That is the same frequency that your cell phone
is working at. I can only imagine how many brain tumor cases
will occurr over the next couple of years due to cell phone
abuse. I'm not certain what my reaction to this would be. Tragic
or "so, what?"
Most of the people that use cell phones are not
doing it out of definite necessity. "Hi! I'm at the mall!
There's a sale!" Most of the time it is rude and inconsiderate
to people around them. Don't even get me started on restaurant
usage.
I really had this opinion and was going to rant
about this and leave it at that, but....
During the WTC disaster, I found how handy cellphones
could be.
I had to borrow a co-worker's phone to let my
wife know that I'm okay. That was useful. This was when most
of the phones in the area were temporarily out of service. But
that's nothing.
There were reports that firemen and policemen
trapped in "pockets" within the site made calls from
cell phones to alert the rescue teams that they were alive and
to keep looking. That's very useful. I don't think they were
calling about all the free stuff they found at the concourse
level of the building. These people were using these devices
the way that they were intended. As communication devices.
Currently, I'm charging mine. I'm going into
the city tomorrow. Apparently, my boss thinks that my talents
would be useful to my company during this crisis. I hope so.
In the event that these terrorists attack again and I'm not
in a place that I would want to be, I'll have my cell phone
to call out and get help.
A cell phone is a tool. A cell phone should be
used when you can't get to a regular phone. Calling someone
every two minutes for no reason is stupid. Calling someone in
an emergency and keeping the call short and simple is cool.
Reaching out and touching someone in the comfort of your home
is nice to do. Doing it in a movie theatre means that you are
a licenced asshole.
Excercise caution. Remember the rule of KISS
(Keep It Simple, Stupid!).
And remember to be courteous. The life you save
could be your own.
